Enel Green Power Panama is one of the major electric system suppliers in Panama and it operates in the Chiriquí region. With an installed capacity of 300MW, it represents 23% of the total capacity registered in Panama.
The Enel Fortuna hydroelectric plant, also known as Central Edwin Fábrega, generates a total of 1661 GWh/year, providing approximately 30% of the national energy production.
The power plant began its operations in 1984. With its 60 m high and 600 m wide dam, it’s still a very impressive construction. The machine room is located under the surface at a depth of 430 meters, 32 kilometres from the basin.
In 1998, the Government of Panama began a privatization process of the electrical sector. In that same year, after a public auction, the government sold 51% of the shares of distribution and thermal generation companies, as well as 49% of the shares of hydropower firms.
In August 2006 Enel Green Power acquired 49% of Fortuna S.A., a hydro-generation company owned by the Panamanian government and by Fortuna’s employees. As of 2008, this participation is held by Enel Green Power, which in Latin America operates renewable energy plants for a capacity of more than 600MW. Enel Green Power currently holds a majority stake in the Company.
