Enel Green Power installs 450 photovoltaic panels to cover the Italian Pavilion at the UN Rio+20 Summit on sustainable development. They are manufactured at the 3Sun factory in Catania, the largest in Italy
450 innovative thin-film, multi-junction panels having an installed capacity of 55 kW produce about 150 kWh per day, with zero emissions. They are solar photovoltaic panels installed by Enel Green Power to cover the Italian Pavilion at the global conference Rio+20.
The panels that have been manufactured by 3Sun (the equal-share joint venture between Enel Green Power, Sharp and STMicroelectronics) can meet up to half the daily energy needs of the pavilion and will save one tonne of CO2 during the conference.
Since these panels are extremely adjustable and versatile, and perfectly integrate with the structure of the pavilion, looking like simple darkened mirrors, Enel Green Power technicians have installed this system in less than a week, supervised by the Italian Environment Ministry.
The daily production, the saved carbon dioxide emissions and the performance of the plant can be viewed on thesito of the initiative, which also contains a smart controller with graphs and data on the daily functioning of the panels.
The initiative, which was planned by the Environment Ministry, follows the successful project called the Green Embassy and developed in Brasilia. In the Brazilian capital, Enel Green Power helped install a photovoltaic system on the roof of the Italian Embassy, within the programmes launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to help the environment.
The 3Sun photovoltaic panel factory in Catania is the largest in Italy and one of the greatest in Europe, being able to manufacture panels for 200 MW per year, and one of the most advanced as regards technology.
