- The installation of photovoltaic panels has been kick-started; by the end of the year an estimated capacity of 50 kW will be able to meet a significant portion of the Italian Embassy’s energy needs.

Rome/Brasilia June 1st 2010 – Today, within the framework of the environmentally friendly initiatives launched by Farnesina (the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), an initial batch of 405 photovoltaic panels will be installed on the roof of the Italian Embassy in Brasilia. This is part of the “Green Embassy” project, carried out in cooperation with Enel Green Power, and in close co-ordination with the relevant Brazilian authorities.

Installation of the panels will be completed over the next four months, and will include connection to the Embassy’s electrical system and the city of Brasilia’s distribution grid. By the end of the year the installed capacity is expected to reach 50 kW, able to meet a significant portion of the energy needs of the Italian embassy. The aim is to make the Embassy totally self-sufficient from the power supply point of view.

“Within a cost containment objective, the ‘Green Embassy’ project meets the requirements for more shrewd and efficient public management and enables to make use, with one of the most advanced technologies, of a renewable energy source with zero emissions, something which Brazil has available in plentiful supply.” Said Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Frattini.

Within this framework, the contribution provided by Enel Green Power was key. Enel Green Power is a leading company in the renewables industry, and operating in Europe and the Americas with approximately 5,700 MW of installed capacity.

The launch of “Green Embassy” to coincide with the Brazilian celebrations for the Italian Republic Day, combines tradition, technology and respect for the environment, and establishes the commitment of Farnesina and the Italian consulate/diplomatic network to the research for environmentally friendly solutions for its operations.
