ENEL GREEN POWER CEO IN MOROCCO AS PART OF ITALIAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MINISTER S OFFICIAL MISSION

Published on Wednesday, 16 September 2015

Rabat, September 16th, 2015 - Enel Green Power CEO Francesco Venturini today took part in the workshop “Italy and Morocco: Prospects and Opportunities for a New Economic Partnership”, which was held in the Moroccan capital of Rabat. Mr. Venturini’s participation in the forum, which was organised by the think tank Conseil du Développement et de la Solidarité (Council for Development and Solidarity), comes as part of Italian Economic Development Minister Federica Guidi’s official mission to Rabat.

Morocco is one of the North African countries that EGP is targeting for its future development, as highlighted in the company’s 2015-2019 strategic plan. The country offers strong prospects for renewable energy growth thanks to its abundant wind and solar resources, favourable macro-economic conditions, growing electricity demand, a reliable legal framework and predictable regulatory development.

EGP’s growth strategy in Morocco includes its participation in renewable energy public tenders organised by public utilities such as the National Electricity Office (ONEE) and the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN), as well as the development of Independent Power Producer (IPP) renewable energy projects in line with Morocco’s 13-09 Law on Renewables. EGP in May opened a Representative Office in Casablanca in order to locally oversee these activities.

Mr. Venturini took the floor in the second panel of the workshop, during which he offered his thoughts on Renewable Energy as a Factor for Growth and Development. The EGP CEO also took part in the high-level meeting between Minister Guidi and the Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane.

During his speech at the panel, Mr. Venturini said: “Morocco has been a renewable energy pioneer in North Africa, establishing challenging targets and promoting a stable and clear regulatory framework for the development of renewables. We have already set foot in the country, establishing a local headquarters, and now we are aiming to grow by installing megawatts and contributing to the achievement of the country’s ambitious energy targets.”

Currently renewable energy makes up around 2.6 GW or 34% of Morocco’s 7.6 GW of total installed capacity. Of that total, solar and wind make up approximately 11%1. The government has undertaken a vast renewable energy programme that will support development of green energy and energy efficiency in the country. Through its Moroccan Integrated Wind Energy Project and Moroccan Integrated Solar Project, the country aims to increase both its wind and solar power capacities to 2 GW by 2020.

Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company fully dedicated to the international development and management of renewable energy sources, with operations in Europe, the Americas and Africa. With a generation capacity equal to approximately 32 billion kWh in 2014 from water, sun, wind and the Earth’s heat – enough to meet the energy needs of more than 11 million households – Enel Green Power is a world leader in the sector thanks to its well-balanced generation mix that provides generation volumes well over the sector average. The company has an installed capacity of more than 9,900 MW from a mix of sources including wind, solar, hydropower, geothermal and biomass. The company has about 740 plants operating in 16 countries.
