The project

Strengthening grid resiliency and providing clean energy

The Azure Sky solar + storage project is located west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Haskell County, Texas. It consists of a 284 MWdc photovoltaic (PV) facility with a 95 MWdc battery.  Its 700,000 PV bi-facial panels are expected to generate over 586 GWh each year, thereby avoiding the equivalent of more than 386,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually – and the battery storage system can store up to 116 MWh at a time. Operations are due to commence in summer 2021.

Community Impact

Enel Green Power is committed to creating long-term shared value and productivity for the communities of Haskell County, Texas.  The Azure Sky solar + storage project includes agrivoltaics in its sustainability strategy. In this case  agriculture and solar power are co-developed on the existing land. This generates benefits for the community by improving native vegetation, protecting local wildlife and ecosystems and establishing pollinator-friendly habitats which may improve local food production.

Work progress status

Status of construction phase

Enel Green Power is committed to a sustainable worksite model. When we build projects, we monitor sustainability performance for energy, waste and water management, and the economic impact on the local community. The hybrid project is focused on the integration of regenerative agriculture and circular economy principles in the design, procurement, construction, operations, and end-of-life management aspects of both PV panels and battery systems. The Azure Sky solar + storage project will utilize a native and pollinator-friendly seed mix to establish pollinator habitat for the life of the project, generating both operational efficiency and ecosystem services. This will provide monarch butterflies, honeybees and native pollinators with access to a high-quality habitat.
