The “Alfredo Pizzoli” hydroelectric plant in Lanzada

The “Alfredo Pizzoli” hydroelectric plant is located in Valmalenco, in the municipality of Lanzada, in the province of Sondrio. This is the second of the three plants that make up the Valmalenco hydroelectric system, which is powered by two upstream dams, namely Alpe Gera (2,051 meters above sea level) and Campo Moro (1,996 meters).

In addition to the Lanzada plant, which is located at an altitude of 1,000 metres, the water in the two reservoirs is used for the production of electricity by the Campo Moro power plants (at an altitude of 2,000 meters) and by that of Sondrio downstream.

The Campo Moro reservoir is connected to the Lanzada plant via an 8 km long derivation tunnel and two 1,500 m long penstocks. The water reaches Lanzada after making a jump of 1,000 meters. The plant, which consists of three equal production units, has a total power of 210,000 kW and an operating capacity of 188,000 kWh.

It came into operation between 1957 and 1962 and produces an average of around 300 GWh per year, which is roughly equal to the annual needs of 111,000 families.

Impact on local communities

The plant fits perfectly into the mountain environment, given that the water supply works are all in the tunnel. The penstocks reach the plant with a jump of almost 1,000 meters on an inclined plane integrated in the middle of the surrounding woods.

At the heart of hydroelectric generation

In collaboration with the Sondrio and Valmalenco Tourist Consortium, we are opening our power plant in order to help people see how water power works close up. Individual visitors, schools or interested groups are all welcome to discover, through a guided tour and interactive visit, the workings of our hydroelectric plant.
