A new achievement for renewable energy in South Africa
The Impofu Wind Farm project, which is made up of three wind farms – Impofu East, Impofu West and Impofu North – is located in Humansdorp, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
The project follows the conclusion of three long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Air Liquide Large Industries South Africa (Air Liquide) and Sasol South Africa (Sasol) to supply 330 MW of renewable energy via a wheeling framework agreement to Sasol’s Secunda site, where Air Liquide operates the world’s largest oxygen production facility.
This makes Enel Green Power one of the first renewable energy companies to conclude a set of large-scale wind PPAs in South Africa for the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) market.
Once completed, the project will consist of 57 wind turbines, 8 substations and 130 km of 132kV high-voltage overhead electricity lines.

Commissioning
Construction commenced in March 2024. Within 18 months, the Algoa Substation was successfully energized for the first time, followed four weeks later by the completion of the 116 km, 132 kV overhead transmission line.
In May 2026 the Impofu North Wind Farm has achieved commercial operation (COD) — the first project within the 330 MW wind farm cluster. This milestone represents an important step for South Africa’s renewable energy sector and signals the transition to delivering sustainable, reliable energy at scale.
Impact on local communities
The Impofu East, West and North projects will support communities in the following ways:
- Buzzy Beezzz Educare and Aftercare is a community-based daycare centre located in Humansdorp, that was established in 2022 as a non – profit organisation, with objectives of providing a safe, nurturing, and educational environment for young children within the community. The daycare also provides nutritious meals daily to support the children’s growth, health, and ability to focus on learning. Currently, the centre has 29 children enrolled in the daycare programme and 13 learners attending the aftercare programme.
- Building of a first community playground, this has served as catalysts for community development, offering essential physical, social, and economic benefits. The Key reason for this project includes promoting health and combating obesity, creating safe haven environments, fostering social equity and inclusion, supporting child development.
- House of Blessing is a non-profit organisation registered in 2024. The organisation consists of five women who are supported by their husbands in operating the initiative. Since its establishment, House of Blessing has been committed to serving the community and has maintained a productive and fruitful vegetable garden that supports food security.
