The Mallero I hydroelectric power plant

The power plant is located in Arquino, which forms part of the town Sondrio, in the province of the same name. It uses water from Lake Palù and Lake Pirola, which is collected through the Curlo intake. The plant is also served by water from the Lanterna stream, the Lanzada power plant, and the Caspoggio and Torno streams, which flow into the loading basin before being used to produce energy. The water flows through an 11-kilometer-long canal to the loading tank in Val di Togno, from which three penstocks lead to the power plant.
The building, which is an example of industrial archaeology and historicist architecture, features Gothic and 15th-century Lombard influences, and these are visible in the terracotta details.

Since 2016, the plant has been home to the "Spazio Centrale," a theater with a rich program of shows, music, and exhibitions.

Impact on local communities

The Spazio Centrale (Central Space) is a theater and cultural center within the hydroelectric power plant. It was created in 2016 through a collaboration between Enel and the Abriga.it association and hosts theatrical and musical performances, with a particular focus on young artists and local productions. The facility includes a theater hall, exhibition spaces, and areas for laboratories and workshops. In addition to performances, the Spazio Centrale promotes artist residencies and temporary exhibitions.
