The plant

Nojoli wind farm

Nojoli, our first wind farm in South Africa, entered into operation in 2016 and is located in the Eastern Cape province, an area with geographical characteristics that make it perfect for wind generation, thanks to the powerful winds that blow along the coast and to the strong, constant wind current between Cookhouse and the border with Lesotho. In addition, these windy areas are close to grid connections, making it easy to feed the South African power grid. The plant’s average annual electricity production meets the needs of approximately 86,000 households, and avoids the emission of over 251,000 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.

Impact on local communities

The plant in Nojoli is a sustainable plant, which implements water saving measures – such as the collection of rainwater – and leverages technologies to avoid the dispersion of hazardous waste, such as the oil used in turbines.

We’ve also implemented a number of projects with remarkable social impact, for example providing access to modern information technologies by setting up two IT Hubs – managed by local communities – in the nearby towns of Bedford and Cookhouse, which also provide computers and computer skills courses for young people looking for a job. Another project provides training to unemployed young people in the local municipality of Raymond Mhlaba, for the management of maneuvers, equipment and working at height.
