The plant

The Tarquinia Solar Park

The Tarquinia Solar Park (in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region) is the largest photovoltaic plant in Italy. It consists of over 300,000 panels spread across an area of 220 hectares, with a total capacity of approximately 170 MW of fully renewable energy. At full capacity, it produces 280 GWh per year – enough energy to meet the needs of 111,000 households and avoid the consumption of approximately 26 million cubic meters of natural gas annually: in other words, 130,000 fewer tons of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. These performance levels are also made possible by the use of bifacial solar panels (which absorb energy on both the front and back surfaces) mounted on trackers – devices that can adjust the panels’ orientation in order to “track” the sun.

Milestone

Italy’s largest agrivoltaic plant

The Tarquinia plant is also a record-breaker in another respect. The solar park is in fact the largest agrivoltaic park built in Italy. It’s located on private land owned by a local company that collaborates with Enel Green Power in integrating the plant with agricultural activities: specifically, forage and borage are grown in the open spaces between the rows of panels and in the buffer zones around the overhead power lines, while olive trees have been planted along the perimeter.

A driving force for the entire region

The plant marks an important step on the path toward the energy transition and is part of our Group’s commitment to the sustainable development of local areas. Its construction has had a positive impact on the economy and communities of Upper Lazio. The companies involved in the construction were actually based in the Lazio region, mostly from the province of Viterbo, and they employed over 300 people during the execution of the work. The plant also generates additional benefits thanks to the crops grown on its premises.
