Delivering shared value along with renewable energy: the Premium Offer

Sustainability has become everyone’s business value: climate change is striking harder and more rapidly than expected, and for the first time, the top five global risks to industry were all environmental, the World Economic Forum (WEF) warned in its 2020 Global Risks Report. This is why Enel Green Power has launched a Premium Offer for our current and potential Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) clients, which allows them to leverage their commitment to sustainability through our Creating Shared Value (CSV) programs. These programs empower the communities that live near our renewable energy plants or those of interest to our PPA clients while fostering social acceptance, attracting climate-conscious investors, and boosting brand prestige. Enel Green Power provides its partners with the opportunity to generate added value for their business by leveraging its diverse project portfolio, its connections with primary stakeholders, and its unique expertise in this field, including in the definition of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the use of reporting tools. How it works Enel Green Power partners can choose between two options: they can participate in one of our existing CSV programs, which are classified by country, year, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), and number of beneficiaries. Or they can co-develop a new project with us — one that is tailored to their business needs and their chosen SDGs, in a community of interest to them. “The possibility for our PPA Partner to co-develop a CSV project can be a great chance for them to increase business opportunities, mitigate reputational risk and improve their sustainability performance in relation to their stakeholders.” Giovanni Tula, Head of Sustainability, Enel Green Power Through our Sustainability Project Portfolio Management (PPM), we classify our sustainability and CSV projects according to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets that are aligned with industrial ones to promote a sustainable model along the entire value chain of the business, in line with the 17 UN SDGs. Once the ESG targets are in place, Enel Green Power provides support in scouting and setting up the CSV project, working with its clients to choose community organizations with which to engage — whether they be NGOs or start-ups, SMEs or social enterprises, local or international networks. As part of its Premium Offer, Enel Green Power delivers stakeholder mapping and stakeholder engagement services, as well as a Social Environmental Economic Context Analysis (SEECA) to provide deep diagnostics on context and impact, and a materiality matrix that acknowledges both client and stakeholder needs. As well, Enel Green Power supports its clients in reporting their own sustainability performance and that of their CSV project. Together, the two parties — Enel Green Power and its PPA partner — devise a mutually agreed-upon communication strategy to get the message out loud and clear about their commitment to sustainability, thereby engaging with investors, consumers, and stakeholders. Our successful collaborations Enel Green Power has consolidated its sustainable business model by deploying a number of CSV programs in our countries of operation over the years. For example, in the United States, we partnered with local scientists to plant flowers and grasses around our low-impact solar plants, creating habitats for bees and other pollinator insects to benefit the ecosystem. In Panama, we founded an educational project that empowers students to develop renewable energy generation projects, implementing them in their communities and homes. The winner achieves infrastructure improvements for their school and multiple incentives. In Brazil, Enel Green Power developed the Family Biowater project, which reuses domestic gray water from showers and laundry to irrigate crops in the northeastern state of Bahia, where one of our wind farms is located. In South Africa, given the absence of a large local labour pool, we are training young people as service technicians in order to match skills demand. Our efforts have been validated by independent certifiers. These include the Gold Standard for the Global Goals, which sets project design requirements for maximum positive climate impact and to credibly measure and report outcomes, and by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), which sets the world’s most widely used sustainability disclosure standards.
