The plant

The Crego hydroelectric power plant

The plant is located in the municipality of Crodo, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. It is a run-of-river power plant located at an altitude of 520 meters that uses water from the Toce River in the Antigorio Valley, one of the last valleys in the Alps north of Domodossola, before the border with Switzerland. This richly wooded valley is known for its spas and hiking trails, the Uriezzo gorges, and the Marmitte dei Giganti (Giants' Potholes). The power plant, which was designed by the famous architect Piero Portaluppi, is in the Art Nouveau style and is an example of how industrial architecture can blend into the landscape, combining aesthetic value with functionality linked to energy production.

Impact on local communities

In 2022, the power plant was equipped with LED artistic lighting to enhance its beauty and architectural details.

Following the landslide that affected the Premia area in 2019, Enel restored the slope and the path between Crego and Cagiogno, improving the area by planting native species and medicinal plants. This commitment evolved in 2023 with the "Bee Sustainable" initiative, an environmental biomonitoring project developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Premia and the beekeeping company Alveare Ossolano (Ossola Beehives), which uses the behavior of bees to assess the health of the environment.
