Nera Montoro hydroelectric power plant
The Nera Montoro hydroelectric power plant, located in the municipality of Narni (in the province of Terni), sits alongside the Nera River in a strategic position within the Valnerina, an area rich in water resources and long associated with energy production. Designed in 1905 by the Società Italiana dei Forni Elettrici to power the industrial plants in Narni Scalo, the facility was built between 1911 and 1915 and became fully operational in 1916.
Part of the Nera Montoro industrial district, the plant was acquired by Enel in 1962. It underwent a major renovation in the early 1990s and was subsequently managed by various operators before returning to Enel.
Today, the plant uses two diversions: Recentino, which powers units 2, 3, and 4 (reservoir), and Stifone, which powers unit 1 (run-of-river).

Impact on local communities
Next to the power plant, the "Le Mole" nature reserve has become increasingly attractive over the years for both residents and tourists, especially in summer. In 2022, Enel Green Power signed an agreement with the Municipality of Narni to launch a project to build an alternative system for managing and discharging water from the Nera Montoro plant, with the aim of improving safety in the tourist area and making swimming possible.
The project also aims to enhance the Narni area, further promoting tourism development and generating economic benefits for the local community and businesses.
