A lively, magical country that’s simultaneously young and ancient, Guatemala has 4,000 years of history, but doesn’t show it. Its roots extend all the way back to Mayan civilization, whose heritage is still alive today in Guatemalan traditions and culture. Known as the land of eternal spring due to its especially mild and sunny climate, today Guatemala is a flourishing nation. Its economy is growing at 3% per year, led by the agrifood and textile sectors. Tourism also plays a large factor, thanks to its extraordinary variety of cultures. It’s so rich in natural resources that it’s considered one of the planet’s green lungs. In an area so well suited to the development of renewables, of course Enel Green Power is present. A long history of sustainability Guatemala is currently one of the leading producers of electricity and is the largest energy exporter in Central America. A mature dynamic market has developed there based on electricity produced mainly by hydroelectric plants. We’ve achieved great things in our solid 16-year history in Guatemala, leading us to become the second largest private energy producer. We currently supply 5% of the country’s entire power generation. Since 2019, we’ve also been the fourth largest energy exporter in Guatemala. Today, thanks to renewable energy produced at the Palo Viejo (87 MW), El Canadà (47 MW,) Matanzas-San Isidro (16 MW) and Montecristo (13 MW) plants, we’ve reached 164 MW of 100% green capacity in Guatemala, a quantity that reduces CO2 emissions by 309,400 tons per year. Customers, the circular economy and electrification Our growth strategy is focused on becoming the leader in regional exports (Mexico and MER - Regional Electricity Market) and creating strategic alliances in end-customer energy supply. There are 4 distinct entities in the Guatemalan energy market with whom we can create commercial relationships: producers, distributors, traders and large users. As a renewable energy producer, Enel Green Power has managed to collaborate with all of them. We are a green enabler for companies who choose sustainability as the driver of their business. It’s a successful model, as proven by the benefits enjoyed by customers who’ve already signed Power Purchase Agreements with us in America, such as Facebook, HEINEKEN México, Danone North America and Mondelēz International. We’re also dedicated to helping local communities with sustainable projects and by supporting local suppliers, gradually guiding them towards less raw material and energy consumption, thus less emissions, and promoting the circular economy. Our dedication to the growth of renewables in Guatemala has recently been strengthened by an agreement signed with Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala SA (EEGSA)- the company responsible for electricity distribution in the Guatemala, Sacatepéquez and Escuintla departments - to supply over 42 GWh of green energy per year for 5 years. Thanks to clean energy from the Matanzas and San Isidro hydroelectric power stations, we’re helping improve living conditions for over 1.3 million inhabitants in these areas by guaranteeing stable access to sustainable energy. An agreement to supply 1.2 TW of renewable energy for 10 years with the Magdalena Group is also on the way. The energy will come from all of our hydroelectric power stations.
