3 SUN 2.0 and its production line of cutting-edge solar panels are slated to receive financial backing of over 80 million euros for its PV factory in Catania, Italy. This endeavor will be partly financed for the sum of 9 million euros by the European research and innovation program Horizon 2020 European Call LCE-09-2016-2017 through its “Ampere” project and for about 14 million euros by Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development and Sicily.
This expenditure on 3SUN’s new production line is strategically connected to a 20 million euro investment slated for Enel’s Innovation Lab in Catania, a 10-hectare site hosting labs and proving grounds where testing takes place on cutting-edge technologies for thermal and photovoltaic solar, microgrids, storage and wind power.
Such a wide ranging investment program involving 3 SUN and the Innovation Lab is a 100 million euro boost for Enel’s center of excellence in renewable energy and innovative technologies that’s putting the Sicilian town of Catania on the world’s green energy map.
Innovation Lab’s 25 year-long history in research and innovation, coupled with 3 SUN’s new investments, hold the promise for Catania’s metropolitan area to become a technological campus and a young entrepreneurship booster in order to stimulate further research and innovation, along the path already blazed by Enel’s Open Innovation philosophy.
