Drive safely! Getting the message across to youngsters of all ages

According to the World Health Organization, every year an estimated 1.3 million people die as the result of road accidents. Even more shocking perhaps is the fact that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29 years. More than half of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Creating greater awareness of road safety is therefore essential, and that is why we decided to organize, together with the “Panos Mylonas” Road Safety Institute (R.S.I.) a special, free event on Saturday October 15. It took place at the Krousonas High School in Heraklion in Crete. It was open to all citizens and was held with the support of the Municipality of Malevizi. The main objective of the event was to raise awareness and inform students, teachers and local communities about the importance of road safety, using experiential education through interactive games. The usual causes of road accidents are well-known: speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, not wearing seat belts and helmets, as well as the lack of respect for pedestrians and cyclists. Interactive During the event, the participants had the opportunity to take part in experiential training on road safety and traffic education. State-of-the-art simulators for dangerous conditions were provided by the R.S.I.’s Mobile Unit. At the same time, experts like Stelios Karakoudis, Heraklion’s Traffic Police Commander, and Manos Brouzas, R.S.I.’s Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineer, led a discussion on "Road Safety: One way without roadblocks." The participants, depending on their age, had the opportunity to follow a specific route wearing special drunkenness simulation glasses. They were also able to use simulators which showed them what it was like be in a crash and even an overturned car. They then learnt about the risks posed by unsafe behaviors on the road network. This was done through theatrical role play and psychomotor exercises. With our support, R.S.I. offered an educational course to children of all ages, on safety and responsible behavior on the road. The ultimate goal of this experiential event was to educate and inform the participants about the need to comply with road safety rules in order to reduce accidents and avoid the loss of life. All our initiatives for Creating Shared Value (CSV) are fully aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs. This event in particular relates to Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education).
