In Enel Green Power, we are committed of a sustainability model that supports local communities and economies through social “green” initiatives. One of these initiatives is the educational program “Vamvakies a Social Green Project”, in which Enel Green Power and Wise Greece jointly collaborate with the Bioeconomy & Environment Cluster of Western Macedonia (CLuBE) and the Municipality of Kozani, to promote agri-food entrepreneurship. The innovations of the program This innovative educational program, in which -for the first time in Greece- the cultivation of aromatic plants such as paliouri and mountain tea is carried out in a solar park by women and residents of the Municipality of Kozani, helps participants develop their business skills and at the same time earn income to support their families. In particular, more than 8000 plants were placed to the fields during the 32 visits. With equipment that includes the necessary tools for the best crop yield and a holistic training for cultivation practices, certification procedures and essential entrepreneurship tools, the program assists trainees in acquiring all the necessary skills to create a sustainable business. Doing so will help change Western Macedonia’s production model at a time when this is more necessary than ever. The 1st cycle of seminars was successfully completed A total of 250 participants attended the first seminar cycle of the program, 61% of whom were women and 39% were men. Seven qualified trainers participated in the seminars by offering valuable knowledge through a program of seven thematic modules, such as “entrepreneurial empowerment”, “myths and realities about entrepreneurship”, “marketing and storytelling”, “entrepreneurship and product development”, as well as crisis management. Almost 8 out of 10 participants in the “Vamvakies a Social Green Project” said they were interested in working in the agri-food sector, and 90% said they wanted to start their own business. The program’s success was unique, considering that more than 3 out of 4 participants stated that they did not know essential business tools before the seminars. In contrast, 87% said they gained insight and practical knowledge after the seminars. Also, 95% of the participants stated that they gained knowledge for their next business steps, and 81% said they learned valuable lessons and can now face any professional difficulty. Furthermore, 87% said that the thematic sections’ presentation was intelligible, evaluating the examples from other companies’ practices as applicable. Last but not least, 100% of participants responded that they would recommend the seminars to their friends. As the participants stated, “the topics meet our needs. From the speakers’ personal experiences, we learned many useful things for our future goals”. It is worth noting that the next seminar, workshop is scheduled to take place on September 28 in Kozani. An award-winning program The innovation of the “Vamvakies, a Social Green Project” was so great that it was rewarded by receiving the Gold Award in the “Decent Work & Economic Development” category of the Hellenic Responsible Business Awards 2022 as well as at Bravo Sustainability Awards 2022. In Enel Green Power we demonstrate our commitment to a sustainability model which is based on initiatives that benefit the residents and the ecosystem of the areas where it operates. In this way, it ensures the sustainable development of local communities, which is based on trust and the development of an honest dialogue with locals.
