Vamvakies: when decarbonization and helping the local community go hand in hand

Enel Green Power has completed its 59th renewable energy project in Greece, thereby reaching a total installed capacity of around 482 ΜW. More specifically, the new RES (Renewable Energy Source) project is a 6.5 MW photovoltaic plant, located at Agios Ioannis-Vamvakies, near the city of Veria, in the northern part of the country. Construction work began in July 2020 and was completed in January 2021. The Vamvakies PV project will prevent the emission of 6,500 tons of CO2 per year and contribute towards the greater decarbonization of Western Macedonia. Sustainable Construction The “Vamvakies” solar power plant followed Enel Green Power’s Sustainable Construction Site model. A series of best practices that aimed to minimize the impact of the construction site on the environment were implemented. A waste management system was set up, energy-saving bulbs were used in all construction site facilities and a 6,72kW stand-alone PV plant was installed to cover the energy needs of the site. This was in order to minimize its environmental footprint. Furthermore, construction workers drank water from reusable bottles, in order to reduce the use of plastic. Helping the local community Enel Green Power is contributing to the sustainable development of the country and creating shared value for the communities where it operates. This was also the case with the Vamvakies construction site. During the challenging period of the COVID -19 emergency, EGP has been supporting the health and well-being of its host communities. Medical equipment was donated to the Polymylos Medical Center. Specifically, the donation included a nebulizer system, a drug delivery device used to administer medication in the form of a mist inhaled into the lungs. This is mainly used in treating asthma and other respiratory diseases or disorders. We also donated an oxygen concentrator for oxygen provision to individuals who suffer from breathing-related disorders and low oxygen concentration in their blood. We donated approximately 500 pallets from the packaging of panels and inverters to local shepherds. This is in order to store and protect their hay. At the same time, two water tanks with total capacity of three tons that were used at the construction site were donated to the nearby village of Polymylos. They will be used as part of the fire protection program at the local soccer stadium. The rest room facilities at a smaller stadium, which is mainly used by 35 children, were out of order when we began work at the site. Enel Green Power completely renovated the facility in order to improve its health and safety infrastructure. Last but not least, several laptops were given to students at the Polymylos elementary school, and this will help them continue their online classes. During the break periods between school semesters, “love packages” containing necessities and long-lasting goods were distributed to families in need. As always, the well-being of the communities that host EGP plants are at the heart of everything we do.
