Together with Delfina’s additional capacity, ANEEL has granted EGP with a pair of new wind farm projects: the 510 MW Lagoa dos Ventos in the state of Piauí and the 78 MW Morro do Chapéu II in the state of Bahia.
New energy. More sustainability
With 180 MW worth of installed capacity and an annual renewable energy production capacity of 800 GWh, the first section of Delfina wind farm went online in 2017.
The new 29.4 MW sector will instead guarantee an annual production of over 160 GWh.
Overall, Delfina will be able to generate a total of 960 GWh worth of renewable power each year, offsetting the emission of over 580,000 tons of CO2.
From 2019 to 2022, energy generated by Delfina’s expansion will be sold on the spot market. Starting from 2023, the wind farm’s output will be regulated by a 20-year contract which provides for the sale of specified volumes of energy to a pool of distribution companies operating in Brazil’s regulated market.

Abiding by the Creating Shared Value (CSV) model that combines business development with the needs of the local community, we’ve opted to safeguard the delicate ecosystem surrounding our facility.
As a matter of fact, Delfina is at the heart of the Caatinga, South America’s largest shrub forest with a surface of over 730,000 sq. km, spanning over 10 states in northeastern Brazil and one of the world’s most biodiverse ecoregions.
This is the reason that prompted us to define a series of environmental protection initiatives targeting local endangered species, like the Lear’s macaw, the jaguar and the puma.

In 2017 we’ve set off testing a new technology using GPS signals to study the living patterns of the Lear’s Macaw, like its breeding and nesting grounds, flight paths and usual habitats. After an initial adaptation period, during which macaw’s born in captivity learned how to feed autonomously, improve their flight and recognize predators, they were finally freed in their new environment.
Furthermore, EGP’s environmental conservation team, made up by Brazilian natural scientists, started out a mapping program for jaguars and pumas in Delfina’s neighbouring areas tasked with studying their natural habitat through satellite-based readings and telemetry.
These projects played a substantial role in Enel Green Power being awarded in 2018 as Brazil’s most sustainable company by the Exame Sustainability Guide.
