HJT Photovoltaic Panel

From the research and innovation project 3SUN 2.0 comes the latest-generation photovoltaic panel from EGP’s factory, located in the heart of the Mediterranean.

A technological leap that revolutionises the production of the system, originally based on multi-junction thin-film silicon, to allow for a new line of latest-generation bifacial photovoltaic modules in Hetero Junction Technology (HJT).

The new module is produced exclusively in the Catania factory by following two stages of production line development:

  • The first, started in 2018, called for the creation of a new assembly line of crystalline silicon cells for the production of panels with bifacial architecture, with a maximum production capacity of 80 MW/year.
  • The second moves on to the installation of a new production line of HJT cells, operational in the second half of 2019, with a maximum production capacity of 200 MW/year.

The factory works in a continuous cycle, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a production of 1,300 photovoltaic panels per day for a total of about 470 thousand panels per year.

HJT technology guarantees high performance and low degradation of the module, substantially improving the results of the multi-junction solution and guaranteeing solar photovoltaic panels that are more efficient and competitive in many ways:

Efficiency

The efficiency of the photovoltaic panel, i.e. the conversion ratio between irradiation and power generated, goes from 10% of the previous thin film product to more than 20%, at module level. The HJT approach enables solar cell to outperform with respect to other commercially available solar cells. In February 2020, 3SUN EGP PV Innovation Group has demonstrated that the efficiency of industrial scale solar cell can achieve even more than 24.5% (cell area of 244.3 cm2, industrial standard size).

Power

The maximum electric power of the HJT modules ranges from 370W to 400W per panel, with possibility of increasing the output due to new implementations under development, featuring a marked improvement over the 140W of the previous thin film model

Energy production

The bifacial solution of the new solar panel allows it to capture light from the back and produce more electrical energy, about 15-20% more than traditional monofacial panels. The result is the possibility of installing a smaller number of panels and reducing the surface area used.

Life expectancy

Thin-film photovoltaic modules guaranteed a life cycle of up to 25 years, while HJT has a robustness that gives it a life expectancy of over 30 years

Resilience and adaptability

The new photovoltaic panel is developed for excellent performance even in situations of extreme weather, ensuring high production at elevated external temperatures.
