Agrivoltaics

Often, in order for a new technology to be adopted and become widespread, certain conditions need to be met and these are not necessarily positive. For instance, the environmental crisis that we are experiencing, together with the need to limit the take up of agricultural land, has paved the way in recent years for the development of agrivoltaic technology. Agrivoltaics is the synergy between photovoltaic production and agriculture. The idea was conceived at the beginning of the 1980s and is currently undergoing significant evolution.

The concept of agrivoltaics – the integration of farming activities and the production of electricity using photovoltaic panels on the same piece of land – was first proposed in 1982 by Adolf Goetzberger, founder of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.
