The colors of hydrogen

The colors of hydrogen

Hydrogen is everywhere in the universe. However, this precious element is not present on Earth in isolated molecular form but needs to be “extracted” using an energy source to separate it from other elements with which it has a chemical bond. As Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, explains, the only low impact method of extraction is through electrolysis of water powered by energy from renewable sources. This is the so-called “green hydrogen,” which can play a leading role in reducing the use of fossil fuels.
