Oklahoma: Strong Roots. Boundless Opportunities

“The funds to expand our training facility will give us a much better space to meet our required training needs and prepare for critical situations.””

– Brian Putnam, Chief of Smokey Valley Volunteer Fire Department

Creating scholarship opportunities and further advancing education are critical to ensuring community vitality, which is why we work with Oklahoma schools and universities to realize opportunities for local students. Enel Green Power partnered with Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) to establish a $150,000 scholarship program for students majoring in either wind energy or education.

We also partner with local school districts to drive innovation and provide critical resources like laptops and access to digital learning tools. Working with educational organizations like REcharge Labs, KidWind, and Spiritwind Kidz Ranch, we aim to teach students about wind power and promote professional development workshops for hundreds of Oklahoma educators.

Powering a Sustainable Future

By nature, renewable energy demonstrates sustainability, which is why Enel Green Power is determined to create a more sustainable future for our communities and generations to come. In addition to becoming neighbors and partners, we aim to ensure that our facilities are constructed and operated with sustainability in mind. We believe sustainability should permeate all aspects of a project's life, from the moment we break ground through to the beginning of operations.

“Creating shared value is Enel Green Power’s sustainability framework that incorporates social and community issues. Creating shared value is not just about being a good neighbor, it’s about earning and sustaining our social license to operate, and by doing so, by listening and partnering with local community partners. ”

– Marcus Krembs, Director of Sustainability, Enel Green Power

Both the Thunder Ranch and Red Dirt projects were constructed as part of Enel Green Power's Sustainable Construction Site program, which includes activities like recycling reclaimed materials for community projects, wood-recycling programs, conducting repair and maintenance on local roads, and investing in critical community operations and initiatives.

Thunder Ranch, located in Garfield, Kay, and Noble Counties is our first North American wind farm with an operational rooftop solar PV system. This solar array will power the site’s operations and maintenance building with around 55 kWh of energy per year.

Securing Oklahoma’s Position as an Energy Leader

Our projects will bring in more than $317 million in property tax payments to nearby rural communities over the course of their operations and our lease agreements with landowners total more than $294 million. Enel Green Power is a top five taxpayer in every county where we have a power plant and a top two taxpayer in every school district where we have a power plant.

“Built without the use of wind-specific state incentives, Red Dirt represents the impact policymakers and businesses can make when we work together. For two counties in my district, Kingfisher and Logan, this [project] represents a $420 million investment.”

– Sen. A.J. Griffin, R-Guthrie

Thunder Ranch and Red Dirt also represent Enel Green Power’s ability to attract additional investment in Oklahoma’s abundant wind resource through corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Thunder Ranch, encompassing Garfield, Kay, and Noble counties has a capacity of 298 MW, 152.5 of which has been purchased by Anheuser Busch, providing the company with enough renewable electricity to produce more than 20 billion 12 oz. of beer. In Kingfisher and Logan counties, the Red Dirt wind project, which has a capacity of 300 MW, will supply T-Mobile US, Inc. with 160 MW of clean energy. With one of the greatest wind resources in the country, Oklahoma is in an excellent position to take advantage of this growing corporate energy market.
