More sustainable power plants: the targets reached with the Sustainable Plant model

Some 100 biodiversity initiatives, 620 tons of waste recycled, savings such as 83 million liters of water and 2.7 million euros. These are just some of the achievements for the Sustainable Plant program in 2022. The program was launched by EGP in 2018 in order to make all operational activities at its power plants increasingly sustainable. This strategic model aims to identify the good practices developed by each individual plant in terms of sustainability and adopt them where possible in others, thereby raising standards in the countries where we operate, with a positive social and environmental impact. During the course of 2022, we collected 2,266 examples of good practices from 1,124 power plants. How to measure sustainability One of the main elements guiding our activities in 2022 was the measurement of the value generated by the implementation of good practices in plants. We thus developed 12 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) linked to six specific areas: energy, emissions, water, waste, biodiversity, and people. From the 12 indicators we then developed a single overall index, the Sustainable Plant Index (SPIN), which ranks the level of sustainability of a power plant. Based on this measurement, it will be possible to identify areas where there is room for improvement and then take the most suitable measures. Some examples of sustainable plants Starting in the United States, in the area around the Red Dirt wind farm in Oklahoma, we set up specialization courses for technicians. Furthermore, in collaboration with local educational institutions, we developed courses on renewable energy in elementary, middle and high schools. This is a way to involve local communities in our activities but also to prepare young people for a professional future. In Panama, in the area where the large Fortuna hydroelectric plant is located, we provided families with training and useful tools to create home gardens. This helps the local economy, but it is also a disincentive to prevent people from cutting down trees in order to create space for monocultures. There are also numerous, biodiversity protection initiatives, such as the reforestation of more than 5,000 trees around the Huampaní power plant in Peru: this also helps reduce flood damage. Other measures include the installation of ramps to facilitate the safe passage of wildlife in hydroelectric reservoirs: this was done in Cornatel, in Spain, and Isola Serafini and Coghinas, in Italy. In order to save water at the Nojoli wind farm in South Africa, we installed water tanks connected to a rainwater harvesting system from the gutters. This is a simple but effective solution that reduces well water use and provides an excellent source of backup water for emergencies. These are just a few of our many initiatives, which include, among others, support for beekeeping, integration between solar farms and pastures, and robotic techniques for water management. New innovative solutions are being added year by year.
