Sustainable Plants, innovation and integration

The energy produced by Enel Green Power’s plants is more than renewable. A new set of actions and best practices will allow us to minimize environmental impact and maximize performance, leading to economic and social benefits for communities. Energy itself becomes sustainable.

The challenge of sustainability requires us to respond to growing expectations from society and the market.

This is why Enel Green Power has redefined its strategy and operational processes, starting with a sustainability model based on CSV (creating shared value). EGP has developed the sustainable plant model, which allows it to increase the sustainability of its plants around the world through the adoption of best practices.

The sustainable plant aims to minimize the impact of Operation and Maintenance’s (O&M) actions on the environment, improving the operational efficiency of the plants themselves and ensuring responsible resource use. The model also aims to increase positive impacts for local communities, in order to foster long-term relationships with stakeholders.

It’s an ambitious goal, which can only be achieved through a profound knowledge of the environmental and social context, and by implementing specific mitigation actions, creating shared value (CSV) and applying the principles of the circular economy.
 

EGP’s Sustainability

With this new operating model, EGP is committed to making sure a plant is sustainable, and not just through the energy it produces with renewable sources.

The goal is to apply the CSV model to plants, as it is applied to construction sites and offices, using EGP’s three pillars of sustainability.

The CSV model is an integral part of EGP’s business model, is fully integrated in the value chain, and involves three fundamental principles.

The first concerns social actions. EGP is committed to ensuring the long-term sustainable development of the communities where it works.

The second involves safeguarding the environment, in order to avoid negative impacting natural resources.

The third and final point concerns operational efficiency, business optimization (or the creation of new business), by improving production and minimizing costs.
 

Enel Green Power’s Sustainable Challenge

The sustainable plant model was developed by EGP’s O&M division, in collaboration with HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment, Quality) and Sustainability. 

At the beginning of 2018, over 100 sustainable practices were collected – via a specific contest on the Open Innovability platform – from the 19 Countries where O&M works. Around 40 were then selected, after being deemed optimal and replicable, to create a dynamic catalogue to be distributed to all countries.

The efforts of O&M, HSEQ and Sustainability are now focused on the implementation of the sustainable plant model on EGP’s entire fleet, which includes more than 1200 plants on all continents.

A few months ago, in September, the sustainable plant model was introduced in countries where O&M works, with an initial training phase to introduce the model.

A second stage, with specific workshops, started in Spain, Mexico, Central and Latin America in November, and will continue throughout 2019 in Italy, North America, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and the rest of the world. The goal is to swiftly turn our plants into sustainable plants.
 

Innovation and Technology

Whether we’re talking about drones for maintenance, innovative systems for more efficient cleaning of solar panels or sustainable tourism, the impact of our actions must be measured with specific data.

The sustainable plant can be evaluated through specific KPIs, such as total CO2 emissions, waste production, recycling percentage, water consumption and reuse.

Each plant will have a scorecard, supporting the model by measuring all the most important environmental and social KPIs.

In the coming years, the implementation of Enel Green Power’s sustainable plant model and the experience it creates will help make our plants more and more sustainable, starting with development in the Business Development and E&C phases, continuing through the O&M phase and all the way to decommissioning.
